i'm boring

Last night, after a recital, I went out with other members of the ensemble, and I came to the conclusion that I was really boring! Especially after a courtesy laugh or two. (sigh) At least they were still kind.

I'd like to blame this on the fact that I am a musician, who not only has to practice, but must make what she practices on - reeds.

I enjoy what I do, and thus am okay with the fact that at times I may end up being boring.

However, if I felt a need to change things up a bit, here are some other career alternatives:

Floral Design

Interior Design (specializing in small cramped bathrooms)

Ikea kit putter-togetherer

Hair Cutter

These are all quite viable alternatives to oboe player, no?

changes

I am not sure if any of you happened to stop by the blog in the past ten or so minutes, but if you did, you may have noticed a few new captions. Above the picture (I do have to admit that thanks to my father, it is no longer squashed, which has irritated me from the beginning) there was the caption of Little Fathead, then later, SallySue and Little Fathead.

Then the animal which I was not allowed to have when I was wee, changed to Guinea Pigs, to Llamas, and now back to goats, the original listing, and the theme of the bloggie.

This is a lesson to all - if you use your parent's computer, make sure you log out, so that your father, who thinks he's SO funny (my dad is currently sitting next to me, reading over my shoulder, so I'm not talking behind his back) had fun changing a few of the captions.

done!

Tonight I had my oboe recital.

Thanks to those who were able to attend.

It's nice to be done with the recital, my auditions, and one orchestra concert.

I've heard back from FSU and UNCG, and was accepted to both. I passed my recital (so all I have left are my oral exam, and my 'scholarly paper'). Here is a review from Deseret News about Saturday's concert. If you look at the seventh paragraph, I (English Horn) received a mention! Huzzah.

It has been a good week for oboe playing.

conversation with a cabbie

Me: "I'm headed to the music building.
Cabbie: "Off to a concert?"
M: "No, I'm meeting with a professor."
(I didn't realize till I was saying this, that it could be misconstrued.)
C: "You have an audition, then?"
M: "Yes"
(Phew. I was off the hook.)
C: "Well, you make sure you flirt nice with him, and you get started on the right foot."
(What the HECK!)
M: "Umm, that's not the foot I'm trying to start on."

Random stuff

C: Where are you from?
M: "Utah."
C: "Lord, girl, are you a Mormon?"
M: "Yes, sir."
C: "How many wives does your husband have?"
(sigh)
M: "I'm not married."

Talk about polygamy - he mainly talked, though he did ask if the Mormons still "did that stuff" and I said no.

Then the rest of the way was about crooked pastors always asking for money.

I informed him about the Mormon Church lay ministry. He seemed okay with that.

Then he went off on how other churches he tried out wouldn't let him smoke or drink. Or go to bars.

I kept my mouth shut - I'd already taken the idea away that LDSs aren't polygamists, and mentioned lay ministry.

The Word of Wisdom was something I'd leave for the missionaries.

My only other extreme religious experience here in the South was passing a street preacher, who informed me that Jesus was coming again.

"I know."

i think it's a sign

Though I'm not sure what I'm to interpret from the sign. I do have more info on North Carolina - but Tallahassee has just been so crazy that I don't think it's good to wait.

I packed Tuesday night, finishing up Wednesday morning and loaded up everything in the car ready for a full day of school, then a jaunt up to Auntie Marki's so that she could drop me off at the airport Thursday morning.

All has gone as planned until I go to reaarange things at said Aunt's house. An important item is missing: my wallet.

I look through all my luggage. No luck.

The car: no luck.

I now have to stop and think about where I last used something from my wallet. Wendy's. I used the drive through, so I must have still had it then. Then there was the gas station. I used a different card there, but that's the only place that I got out until I arrived at Marki's.

I head downstairs to find their phone number. No luck.

By this time, Marki is alerted, and we go out to search the car again. Blast and tarnation.

Finally we give up and I call home, hoping that Matthew answers. Thankfully he does and he's able to bring me my passport, and driving by the Chevron on the off chance that it's still there.

We meet him at Turkey Point (aka Thanksgiving Point) - no wallet. But now at least I can board the plane. (Side note: Matthew got pulled over in Springville, but the officer was kind, and let him off with a lower fine.)

I'm (I think understandably, too) grumpy by this point. But there's nothing I can do, except sleep, and so I do.

Thankfully my ATM card was in the car, and not lost, so I was able to access cash. phew. I got on the plane without too many difficulties (plane delayed because crew was still in Jackson) and was off. I learned I was not able to rent a car (aw, come on :) ) but I could still stay at my hotel.

My neighbors on the plane were all very kind. I even received a job offer. Too bad I'm not in food science, or I'd be set.

No lost luggage, but the descent into Atlanta really messed my ears up, and I think aggravated, no I know aggravated a cold / allergy stuffs I've had. Not too bad, other than the fact I can't breathe too well. Okay, done complaining.

I took a taxi to the hotel, not that big a deal. Today I traipsed around Tallahassee, walking about 6 miles I found out. I strangely got a light sun burn. I went to get some medicine, and to have something to do besides hang out in the hotel. It was kinda fun to be a pedestrian.

Then it was time to go to a chamber concert, and I got there (via taxi) and listened to the first, and then during the second (Loeffler trio) the power went out.

Can you see the plane in the power lines? Well, that was the cause of the power outage. Down the street they were about to start Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. Talk about irony. (Side note: pilot is injured, but nothing serious, and power is or will soon be restored.)

I left, and took another taxi home. Ate at undisclosed place where the food was not worth the money and waited an hour, and now, I'm off to bed.

As one of my plane neighbors put it, I must be going to do well here.

Either that, or really really badly. I mean, doesn't this make it seem like I'm tempting fate?

happy birthday to ME!

Well, I'm here in North Carolina this week, enjoying the hotel's free wireless internet (absolutely fabulous!) and would like to share a few thoughts I've had at turning the big 25.

I realize this isn't old - I wasn't going to say that I am. I may jest about being 'so old' but I know I'm at the age I should be for my year of birth.

Anyhoo, what I have realized, though, there is a price to becoming more experienced: your favorite characters from Jane Austen.... guess what, I'm older than most of them now. Okay, but characters, I mean those dashing men that come a change a young woman's life forever.

Well, in looking over it again (last time it was quite late) there are only a few that are younger. None of the really matter to me except Mr. Ferrars.

The point is, that as I get older, said men stay the same age. I mean honestly, I know guys that are 25 but they are not an Edmund Bertram.

Okay, there are people like that.

I guess it's that I'm not a Lizzy, nor a Jane. Well, maybe Jane Eleanor Fanny mix??

Now this train of thought is becoming a bit depressing. Not too bad, because it is still my birthday day, and birthday days are good days.

I'll let you, kind reader go and make of this what you will. I'm off to celebrate at Chili's and Borders books!

eww...

Who knew!
