from bach to the doors

This week I went to DI in search of glasses for a wedding this next week. (I have two flower jobs these next two weeks! And only one is a relative!) I did have much success. I bought 8 glasses each at three different heights, one of each height is going to be on the table. I'm excited to see how they turn out.

Whilst at the DI I figured I might as well see if there's anything worth getting, so I browsed my favorite section. Shoes. I found some - they aren't the most comfortable, but they are cute, and more importantly, they are orange. Buoyed by my success in the shoe department, I continued browsing and found some short pants, jeans, and a short khaki skirt that fit, and two lightweight cotton blouses for summer. A summer that may be on its way. All this for less than a pair of pants from the mall. Hoorah.

As I was checking out, Alejandro, my checker, finished the first transaction of clothing. Then I started putting the 24 glasses on the counter. At first he felt bad for not including them together, but it worked out for the best, because I like to keep business and pleasure separate.

As we were going to be there a while, since he had to wrap all 24 glasses in newspaper, I began to talk to him:

M: Do you mind asking where you are from?
A: No, not at all, Mexico City. Do you know there?
M: No.
A: It is too big. Too many cars too many people.

more wrapping.

A: What do you study here?
M: Music.
A: Do you sing or do you play?
M: I play oboe.
A: Oboe. I play guitar.
M: Do you play classical?
A: No. I like the blues.
M: Who are your favorites?
A: I like Led Zeppelin, Purple Haze...The Doors. Bach.

wrapping still.

A: You are the first oboe player I have met.
M: Neat.

done wrapping.

M: Thanks for chatting, Alejandro.
A: You too. What is your name?
M: Heidi.
A: Nice to meet you Heidi. See you again.
M: Yes.

Then I grabbed my bags, and headed out, feeling only slightly guilty for not admitting I spoke spanish, and very impressed by his english. Mainly I was happy that I had taken the time to chat with those that help out. I normally don't. But when I remember to, I try. There's so much I have gained, friends like Alejandro, from that little extra time. After all, Isn't it about time? :)

I love talking to people when I remember, too. It's fun the kind of people you can meet at a bus stop and in the checkout line.

I'm so happy to hear that you are doing flowers!!!
